Century Embedded Technologies and VT Media Technologies Form Set-Top Box Strategic Alliance

Expanded partnership leverages Century Embedded Technologies software strengths with the hardware engineering prowess of VT Media Technologies to focus on the low-cost broadband/IP set-top box marketplace.

ALEXANDRIA, Minnesota and SALT LAKE CITY, Utah Century Embedded Technologies and VT Media Technologies jointly announced today the formation of a Strategic Alliance to leverage their combined engineering, sales, and marketing resources in an aggressive push into the low-cost broadband/IP set-top box (STB) marketplace.

Century Embedded Technologies, a recognized leader and developer of open-source software projects for the Linux operating system, and VT Media Technologies, an acknowledged leader in the design of advanced set-top box hardware, have been working together to develop a tightly-integrated end-to-end set-top box solution. As a result of this collaboration, the VT900 STB developer kit was announced in December of 2001, followed by the announcement (at the 2002 CeBIT conference) of the VT100, the world's first broadband set-top box system with a price-point below US$150.

"This strategic alliance with VT Media Technologies will result in cost-effective products and services targeted directly at the future of broadband entertainment," said Gregory Haerr, founder and CEO of Century Software. "We are very excited to further solidify and expand our relationship with VT Media Technologies. Their cutting-edge hardware engineering skills and experienced management team prove that it's possible to creatively engineer a platform that can bridge the gap between low-cost hardware and the features required for today's advanced set-top box systems. The combination of our StreamVision' STB suite with the VT Media Technologies' advanced hardware platform leads the industry in price/performance."

"Century is a leader in the embedded Linux marketplace, and we are delighted to expand our relationship with them as our software partner," said Troy Hand, founder and Vice President of Engineering at VT Media Technologies. "They've developed a robust set of set-top box software applications with unique capabilities, and offer an expansive range of products from server and management applications for the head-end to content encryption and video streaming applications running on the set-top box."

Mr. Hand continued: "We believe the future of broadband entertainment revolves around low-cost 'edge' devices attached to every television set in the home or office. These inexpensive devices will offer each individual access to a range of services including video streaming, pay-per-view, video-on-demand, as well as full Internet access. Our on-going relationship with Century, now strengthened by this new strategic alliance, will enable us both to rapidly move forward together into this new marketplace."

Next-generation set-top boxes will be the delivery point for new entertainment programs and services soon to be offered in the home. They will combine Internet access, web browsing, streaming media playback, video-on-demand, email, online shopping, and a host of other capabilities into a single, unified system. According to Gartner Dataquest, digital STB systems continue to be the fastest-growing consumer video application in the consumer electronics marketplace. Gartner projects 49 million units to ship worldwide in 2002, with more than 92 million units delivered in 2005 - an 88% increase over just three years, and representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23.9%.
